Psychological Mistake 4 The Appeal Of Sophistication - forex trading system for sale

Psychological Mistake 4 The Appeal Of Sophistication ~ forex trading system for sale

Many aspiring traders are incessantly chasing after some secret formula or “Holy Grail” in Forex trading. The need for sophistication is rooted in our culture, simply because the world naturally gives more respect and value to advanced or supercharged things. In scientific endeavours, complexity is certainly inevitable, as these are dealing with the elaborations of the physical world.

However, in the context of investment and trading, we are dealing not only with the markets, but primarily with ourselves! As such, much of the complexity in analyzing the markets often cloud our perception of our own psychology when trading the markets. As a result, we are naturally driven to be always looking out for new and advanced trading systems. The truth is that this phenomenon will never end. In order to be successful in Forex trading, we must focus our mental energies on the things that really matter.

The simplest trading rules can be the hardest to follow, but can lead to long-term profitability if the trader looks at the big picture and thinks in terms of long-term probabilities. It is amazing how the human psychological tendencies have sabotaged the trading results of many aspiring traders. Overcoming these tendencies is really far more important than devising complex techniques of selecting the “ideal entry points”.

The world we live in thrives on complexity. This is why the world of employment rewards those who can perform the most complex tasks with the most complex systems of knowledge, skill and expertise. However, in order to be able to trade the Forex market successfully, we need to clear our minds of the clutter of sophisticated concepts, which often blind us from the true nature of market bahaviour.

Many aspiring retail traders feel that it is certainly better and “smarter” to entrust their wealth management plans to investment professionals by investing in mutual funds, simply because these sophisticated professionals are supposed to know better what to do with their money. However, very often we do not realize that the ways in which their funds are operated are not designed to help investors make money. For example, a lot of equity mutual funds allow only long positions, and are mandated to be almost 100% invested all the time. This makes them totally dependent on bullish stock market conditions in order to generate wealth for the investors.

These funds are also often constrained by policies which are not beneficial to the investors. In fact, fund managers often get paid bonuses despite losing money, simply because their losses happen to be less than the benchmarks that measure their performance. The point is that we are often not better off entrusting our investments to sophisticated professionals, because investment success is often not about sophistication, but about mastering the psychology of trading or investing the markets.

Prior to the advances of computer technology, market prices were quoted through very primitive means such as scribbling on chalkboards and ticker tapes. In essence, market prices are really the results of millions of trading decisions. Every "tick" in the market prices are essentially the combined impact of these simultaneous trading decisions at one point in time. In the past eras, when there were no complex computerised representations of market data, some of the traders were able to master the ebb and flow of market movements and ride strong trends profitably.

In recent decades, advances in computer technology have given us many tools to help us better visualize the ebb and flow of crowd psychology. Different visual representations of market price movements have given rise to all kinds of analysis methods.

In the diagram below, we can see that the moment-by-moment impacts of trading decisions by traders all over the world can be represented as a series of price data items at various time intervals. As such, we always talk about the high, low, open and close (last) prices within every time interval. The table below shows minute-by-minute changes in these 4 basic price items.

These numerical data items can also be graphically represented on a 2-dimensional chart. The chart below shows a series of candlesticks, each of which is a pictorial representations of price data. As a result, the succession of blue and red candlesticks gives a more visual depiction of market trends.

To help us improve our analysis, there have been a lot of technical indicators being used by technical analysts. Each of these indicators is really based on some calculations involving historical price data. In fact, there are endless possibilities as to the number of indicators that can be "invented". Experienced traders seem to enjoy cluttering up their charts with all kinds of colourful lines, as illustrated in the diagram below. Somehow, many of them believe that their success in trading the Forex market is largely dependent on discovering more and more new indicators.

In essence, there are really no new inventions. The basic ingredients of all these technical indicators are always the same, i.e. the historical prices of high, low, open and close. These visual representations of crowd psychology are meant to help us improve our analysis and forecasts of market trends. However, in many cases, traders get excessively caught up in the increasingly complex web of indicators, and lose sight of the basic picture, i.e. many traders forget that it is the ebb and flow of crowd psychology that is driving the market, not the indicators. No matter how many fanciful and sophisticated indicators we can devise, the market is never obliged to behave according to the indicators. The basic and simple reason is that indicators are always based on historical data which are "lagging" and we have no access to "future data".

Make no mistake about this. There is certainly a lot of value in good technical analysis, but only if we use the indicators with the right mindset. With proper risk control, certain combinations of indicators can be used and fine-tuned to display appropriate levels of responsiveness to the onset of strong market trends, with decent probabilities of identifying winning trades. It is important to understand and acknowledge that no indicators or strategies can ever predict what will happen to the market. This is why planning for losses is so vital to the trading success of any trader.

There are many traders who enjoy seeking after complexity and sophistication, and easily disregard strategies which sound too simple. The underlying belief is that "If we dont understand it, it must work!" As such, they love to have their charts appear very colourful and cluttered with fanciful lines and indicators. It is almost as if they believe that the more lines they plot on their charts, the more equipped they are to make money from the Forex market. However, the irony is that many traders can trade profitably with only 1 or 2 indicators, or sometimes even none at all, on their charts. The fact is that successful Forex trading very much involves being "pure at heart and clear-minded", i.e. not allowing too many suppositions to cloud judgement of the market. Such a mindset involves the following elements:
  • We are not overly concerned with predicting the future.
  • We are not excessively influenced by past market behaviour.
  • We are merely concerned with the present, i.e. what the market is telling us now, and respond according to a valid trade idea, with the necessary exit plans and risk control measures.
It is important to note that advances in computer technology and sophistication of analysis methods have not improved the success rates among traders around the world. Over the centuries, ever since capital markets appeared in human civilizations, we have always seen the same psychological tendencies among traders and investors. Things have certainly become much more sophisticated. Yet, we still find that most traders and investors lose money in all kinds of markets. The fundamental reason is that human psychology never changes. Unless we make committed and consistent efforts to overcome them in our trading behaviour, we are likely going to be among the majority of traders who get beaten by the markets.

Education Comes Before Riches in Forex Trading - forex impulse trading system

Education Comes Before Riches in Forex Trading ~ forex impulse trading system

By Bob Sparrow

Many of us think about the possibility of working from home and making enough money that we can quit our day job. Investing is one way that we can do that. Forex Trading is an exciting method of investing and can be very profitable.

I want to give you a little bit of advice before you jump in and start trading in the Forex market. I think that this advice will prove to be very valuable to you in the long run. I know that I wish I would have listened to this advice before my first investment. I would probably be a whole lot richer today then I really am.

Invest in your greatest asset; your brain! I know that you have probably heard that before, but please dont ignore this advice. Books are easily available to us. The internet is full of information that we can access and learn from. All of us need to make sure that we have the time to study about the investment that we are getting in before you start investing.

One of the reasons that we dont read and study more is because of the Emotions that are involved in investing. We dont do that because we can already see the new clothes, car, house, and life that we will have after we make our first couple thousand dollars in our first investment. We get caught up in the "hype" of making money through investing and this clouds our reason and causes us to make bad decisions. Dont forget that it is just as easy to loose money investing as it is to make money.

How does one eliminate emotion from the investment equation? Education! Thats right, when you are educated you begin to see the realities of how easy you can loose money just as well as gain it. You begin to get a clearer picture of what it is going to take to be successful in trading and thus causing you to be more educated and be a smarter investor. This normally leads to becoming a richer investor also.

This method of getting started in investing is much cheaper then jumping in head first. I unfortunately didnt educate myself first and consequently lost a lot of money in the process. Dont be like me, educate yourself and be sure that you are ready before you do your first investment.

Dont forget that the people pushing you into an investment are the ones that will make the most money off of you while you are investing. Thats right; they are going to be making a commission off all your trades. Remember that so that you will be able to factor this into you investing decisions. Im not saying these people are evil. In fact they are necessary, just remember that you need to be just as smart if not smarter then they are!

That is pretty much it. You cant escape the fact that you are the one that will ultimately determine your level of riches! If you can learn how to control your emotions and gain some tips on how to trade successfully then you will gain a great amount of wealth. No one has fun loosing money; I hope that you are an investor who has fun!

NZD CAD SHARP 800 PIP FALSE BREAKOUT AS FORECAST - mtf forex trading system

NZD CAD SHARP 800 PIP FALSE BREAKOUT AS FORECAST ~ mtf forex trading system

The last time we examined this pair in April this year, we had projected a sharp decline in favour of the Canadian Dollar based on the False Breakout pattern that had been unfolding. In the chart below, we can see that the Bullish Candles that attempted to break out long from the Pennant were eventually taken out by the slow Bearish Candles that took us back inside of the Consolidation.

DAILY CHART - FALSE BREAKOUT

Based on this movement and the fact that False Breakouts usually lead to breaks at the opposing end of the Pennant, we had projected the pair to break towards the major Outer Uptrend Line.

DAILY CHART - PROJECTED DECLINE

Looking at the current situation on the Daily Chart, we can see that this forecast had in fact materialized over the last few weeks. Starting from the high of the start of the reversal, the pair has declined sharply by approximately 800 Pips.

DAILY CHART - SHARP DECLINE

Now, how could you have taken advantage of this profitable move?

Having seen the start of the breakout below the Support of the Pennant, the first thing to do would have been to draw the Downtrend Lines that were being formed.

DAILY CHART - DOWNTREND LINES

These Downtrend Lines can be used for the placement of Stop Losses with the assurance that your profits will be protected throughout the trade. The next step would have been to enter short at around the 0,9100 area, with a Stop Loss of 100 Pips placed above the Inner Downtrend Line. Your Limit Order would initially be set to the Outer Uptrend Line for a profit of 370 Pips.

DAILY CHART - ENTRY SETUP

As the market began to move in you favour, you would have moved your Stop Loss lower, breaking even initially and then locking in profits below your Entry. This would have continued until the market started to reverse bullish just above the Outer Uptrend Line target. Your Stop Loss would “sadly” have been taken out and you would have pocketed 300 Pips in gains.

DAILY CHART - 300 PIP PROFIT

This is one of the ways in which Breakouts and False Breakouts can be profitably traded in this market. Many of these opportunities are likely to continue to present themselves for us given the current environment of low liquidity that now characterizes the major Currency Pairs. As Swing Traders, we simply need to spot these setups and the appropriate signals provided to take advantage of them, for continued monetary reward.

7 Habits Of Highly Successful Forex Traders - kiss forex trading system

7 Habits Of Highly Successful Forex Traders ~ kiss forex trading system

By Tony Hosea

As it turns out those who are successful in Forex trading seem to have a number of traits in common. Wouldnt it be nice to have the same habits as the most successful traders?

1 - Planning is a big part of a successful Forex traders profitability. As the saying goes "if you fail to plan, you plan to fail". Too many Forex traders use the "fire, aim, ready" method. Let em tell you from personal experience that this is not the way to go.

2 - If you really are planning on making good money with Forex you will need to have sufficient working capital. Without adequate capital you wont be able to stay in the game during challenging market periods.

3 - Have realistic expectations. You will not profit in Forex trading if you dont start to trade until you find a trading method that yields 1000% per month.

4 - All successful trades must have discipline. If you see a trader that has made a ton of money without having discipline then they were probably just lucky. Lucky traders who believe they are geniuses soon find out that being consistently profitable is whats important.

5 - To trade profitably you must think in a big picture fashion with long-term wealth and prosperity in mind. You will have loses in all Forex trading. They are inevitable and part of doing business in Forex. You will profit as long as the sum total of your wins exceeds the sum total of your losses.

6 - Study everything about your trading. By doing your homework you will be doing your trading account a big favor by being better prepared to make it grow.

7 - Resist the urge to get greedy. Getting greedy will erase your discipline and erasing your discipline will erase your profits. Keep the big picture of long-term capital growth in mind and plan to profit over the long haul.

The Perils of Momentum Strategies - best forex trading system in the world

The Perils of Momentum Strategies ~ best forex trading system in the world

Not so long ago I was an agnostic with respect to choosing between mean-reverting and momentum models: I felt that depending on the particular model or environment, each can be profitable. Lately, however, I am increasingly skeptical about the long-term profitability of momentum models. The main reason is the increasing competition among traders, algorithmic or otherwise.

As I mentioned in my previous post, when more and more traders decide to adopt mean-reverting strategies, all they do is to eliminate the trading opportunity. The market becomes efficient, and nobody makes any money, but nobody loses either. In contrast, when more and more traders decide to adopt momentum strategies, the momentum will be established sooner and sooner. For e.g. in the case of event-driven strategies which are mostly momentum-based, the new equilibrium price will have been established almost instantaneously after the event is publicly disclosed. Under this circumstance, any momentum trades that are entered just a little bit late will not only suffer zero profit, but will likely suffer losses as mean-reversion almost inevitably takes over. But how soon do we need to enter in order to avoid this fate? (It cant be too soon either because often a trend need to be established first in order to trigger an entry signal.) It is unfortunately a moving target as competition increases: 1 day earlier might work now, but may not be sufficient a few months from now. (The exit trade also suffers the same problem, as we dont know how long the momentum will last.) It is a dangerous game to play.

Indeed, time is often a friend of the mean-reversion trader: the longer s/he waits, perhaps the more profitable the trading opportunity. And if s/he enters too early and suffers a loss, s/he can always double the position. As I explained in a previous article, stop-loss should generally not be applied to mean-reverting trades on a short time-scale. So even if the trader does not double-up the position, an eventual re-couping of the loss is more than likely. On the other hand, time is an enemy of the momentum trader: if s/he loses the first-mover advantage and suffers heavy loss, I argued in that article that a stop-loss is advised, and thus the loss is forever locked-in.

Given this asymmetry, it is no wonder that algorithmic traders have been warning me long ago that it is hard to find a profitable momentum trade. And I was silly enough not to pay heed to them until now.

Parameterless trading models - forex cobra system trading alert software

Parameterless trading models ~ forex cobra system trading alert software

A portfolio manager that I used to work for like to pronounce that his trading models have "no free parameters". As is customary in our secretive industry, he would not elaborate further on his technique.

Lately, I begin to understand what a trading model with no free parameter means. It doesnt mean that it does not contain any lookback period for calculating trends, or thresholds for entry or exit. I think that would be impossible. It just means that all such parameters are dynamically optimized in a moving lookback window. This way, if you ask: "Does the model have a fixed profit cap?", the trader can honestly reply: "No, profit cap is not an input parameter. It is determined by the model itself."

The advantage of a parameterless trading model is that it minimizes the danger of overfitting the model to multiple input parameters. (The so-called "data-snooping bias".) So the backtest performance should be much closer to the actual forward performance.

Now, it is quite computationally challenging to optimize all these parameters just-in-time for your next order, but it is often even more difficult to do that in a backtest, given that a multidimensional optimization need to be performed for each historical bar. As a result, I personally have seldom traded parameterless models, until I get to research my regime-switching model. That model is almost parameterless (I left out a few parameters from optimization because of a lack of time, not because of any technical difficulties).

The reason backtest optimization can now be done within a few minutes is due to my use of Alphacet Discoverys server-based optimization engine. There may be other optimization software out there that performs similar functions efficiently -- I welcome comments from the reader.
